Brazil Carnival - 5 Entertaining Reasons to Experience It

By Joel Higginbotham

Traditionally celebrated 46 days before Easter and to mark the start of Lent, Brazilian Carnival has become one of the biggest parties in the world. Lent is a time of sacrifice for the 40 days before Easter. Carnival was a way to get a last blast out of the way before Lent started. Here are 5 reasons to see Brazil Carnival.

Brazil Carnival History

Brazil Carnival has gone from being a just a party before the quiet of Lent to being a major extravaganza. It can trace elements back to Christian traditions, African influences and Brazilian Indians. Each part of Brazil has developed its own particular style for Carnival. For example, since the 1930's in Rio there have been huge samba parades, which now happen in the Sambodromo, but the Bahia style has more Reggae style music and African style dancing.

Costumes Worn During the Brazilian Carnival

Many people look at the costumes, or lack thereof, during Brazil Carnival and see nothing but an excuse to put pretty girls and handsome guys in almost nothing. But, the costumes follow a theme. Each samba school or parade group chooses a theme. Over the years every possible theme has been done. The costumes are covered in beads, spangles and feathers. They take months and many man hours to make. The theme is decided a year ahead of time and costume makers start immediately making them.

The Girls of Brazil Carnival

The girls of Brazil Carnival are the most memorable thing, next to the costumes, about Carnival. Many of the young women who are involved in the parades wear very little, and work hard to maintain their bodies for their costumes. But, they aren't wearing skimpy costumes just to wear them, they are wearing them for the pride of their samba schools.

Brazilian Samba Schools

Heavily influenced by African elements and more than just a Latin dance, the samba has evolved into something that is uniquely Brazilian. The country's samba schools don't just teach Brazilians this dance - they make up Brazil Carnival, especially in Rio. Every school puts together its own float and hundreds of people can be involved in a school's performance. Whether a section of the city is rich or poor, it almost always has its own samba school. All the people take pride in their samba school and work together in hopes of making it be the best. The announcement of the best samba school is made at the conclusion of the Brazilian Carnival.

Brazil Carnival Music

The live music of Brazil Carnival adds to the appeal of some of the best costumes and dancing you'll find anywhere. Local groups as well as Brazil's music stars perform on floats that feature tremendous speakers. The parade's participants proudly represent Brazil, and the best way to hear some real Brazilian music is by attending some parades.
