3 Waterfalls You Must See

I've been to loads of waterfalls and as I once noted "you hardly ever get a sh*t waterfall" (except a 'waterfall' the Great Ocean Road in Australia which was literally just a drip of water). So here's my top three from what I've seen - don't miss them! Please note this is a top three of waterfalls I've actually been to, so Angel Falls (Salto Angel, Venezuela and Victoria Falls in Africa don;t qualify...).

1. Gullfoss in ICELAND:

Gullfoss could be a surprise inclusion, it could also be unknown. But believe me - if you ever visit Gullfoss you won't forget it. Iceland has a cold, windy, stormy climate and my visit to Gullfoss was a mixture of them all. It was just amazing. An unbelievable flow of endless constant water just runs and runs and you wonder to yourself - where on earth is all that water coming from! At the first sighting of Gullfoss you will be suitably inspired. An amazing place. To get to it, the best idea is to do the Golden Circle Tour when you're in Iceland and your driver will more than likely take you there. Don't miss it - there's also a souvenir shop nearby plus a coffee shop and restaurant.

2. Niagara Falls and Horsehoe Falls (on the border between CANADA and USA):

There is a trend of waterfalls owned by two countries and this one is more commonly known as the Niagara Falls, yet the Horseshoe Falls is also here and they make up the border between the USA and Canada. View it for free from the various viewing platforms in both countries or get on a boat and do the Maid of the Mist tour which is less than $20 Canadian Dollars. I loved it. And I got wet and kept my trademark blue and white poncho!

3. Iguazu Falls (BRAZIL and ARGENTINA border):

SO the ongoing debate continues - which country is the best to view the Iguazu Falls from? And the answer is BOTH Argentina and Brazil. Plus the only way to experience it properly is actually to visit it from both sides, which I did in 2010 when I visited. Both National Parks are fairly close to each other and there are frequent border buses so you are best to view it from Both Argentina and Brazil. The Brazil one costs slightly more to get, which I noted, here's a rundown of them both:

Iguazu Falls, Argentina:

Reaching the Argentina side of the falls isn't that difficult. You can get a bus that goes along Ruta 12 - it leaves from the centre of Puerto Iguazu and heads along the main road into the national park. This also goes past the Hostel Inn Iguazu Falls (the hostel I stayed in). Once you arrive at the national park, get a day pass (it was 85 Pesos in 2010 on my visit) and you have 3 real options (try and do all three): 1. Upper Falls route - a higher hike of the falls - start the hike at Estacion Cataratas 2. Lower Falls route - this goes closer to the falls itself and leads you down to the bottom parts - start the hike at Estacion Cataratas as well. 3. Garganta del Diablo/Devil's Throat - the most recommended part of the falls - this place is immense - after walk a few kilometres over a bridge you arrive at the waterfalls on a wooden ledge. You can also do boat trips, watch animals and eat in the restaurants inside the park.

Viewed from Brazil:

The Brazil Side of the falls featured wooden platforms right up close and personal to the waterfalls and a decent view over the border into Argentina. On the Brazil side the method of transport was by bus when I was there in 2010. There are a few walks along the side of the waterfall. Iguazu is just incredible!

One thing to note is that both waterfall viewings whether from Brazil or Argentina will be busy such is the marvel of these natural flows of water.

Well that's my top three waterfalls - feel free to disagree or comment. You have to love Iguazu though...it's probably my favourite of the three!

5 Amazing Tranquil Islands!!

I've been to a lot of islands on my travels and really felt like doing a list of my top 5 tranquil islands - really remote places to visit! It was quite hard to narrow it down to just 5 but here I go. These are places you can get head out to for relaxing, where you will meet very few other people. These lists are only made up from places I've actually visited by the way, so that will explain the random places on it (I would actually love to include the remote Rathlin Island in Northern Ireland on my list, except I haven't actually been there as yet). These are in no particular order by the way...

1. Cuverville Island in ANTARCTICA:

Antarctica is quite simply the most peaceful and wonderful continent on the planet, so I have to include one from there on this list. I have chosen Cuverville Island. We did a hike in the thick snow up to the top on our Antarctica adventure and this place just blew my mind it was that breathtaking! Falling snow, penguins, collapsing glaciers as a backdrop and miles away from the office blocks of London, Paris and New York. This place is special. You might get to it if you take an Antarctica trip!

How to get there - If you are booked on a boat trip to Antarctica, there is a chance you will visit Cuverville. It will really depend on the weather conditions, and whether the captain and crew decide to land there. If not, your Antarctica trip may include other islands that I didn't visit. No doubt, they will be just as magical!

2. Bruny Island in Tasmania, AUSTRALIA:

This was a gem of a place to relax away from the world. If you think Tasmania itself is tranquil, try driving to the south east corner of it and head across to the remote Bruny Island. This has Australia's southernmost pub on it as well as some cracking sunrise and sunset viewing points. Plus the added bonus of being able to see some rare WHITE wallabies. How to get there - Get the ferry across from Kettering in South East Tasmania. Ferries are daily, but if you miss the last one, you'll have to stay overnight (there are hotels and campsites on Bruny!).

3. Sark in the CHANNEL ISLANDS:

Sark is inspirational. If you've heard of the Channel Islands, you'll know it's just north of France and a fair bit south of England. Sark was Europe's last feudal state, and believe it or not it has its own parliament and a low population of around 600. It will feel you've been warped back in time on arrival in Sark. It is such a great place to relax away from the busy world. There are no cars on Sark. I visited Sark along with the rest of the Channel Islands while working on the Cross Channel Ferries.

Sark is just north of the French coast, and I don't class it as part of the UK, though it's position is often debated. They have their own stamps and even once fielded an international football team (scoring 0 goals and conceding 70 in their only 4 matches: Sark International Football Team. Arrival is by boat and then a tractor takes you up the steep hill to the main village centre. There are some outstanding views, vintage buildings and pretty gardens. The capital is La Seigneurie. On my visit, I hired a bike and cycled all over the island, including crossing a bridge to an adjoining island, known as Little Sark. I recommend heading to Sark!

Where Is It? - It's near an island called Brecqhou in the Channel Islands. Your best bet to get there is hop on the Bon Marin de Serk mini ferry which leaves from Guernsey's St. Peter Port. Aeroplane isn't an option though there is a small landing strip and a helipad in case of emergency. Private boat could be an option.

4. Tai O, Lantau Island, HONG KONG:

I kind of wanted an Asian representative in this short list, and living in Hong Kong made me favour the wonderful Lantau Island in the west part of Hong Kong. If you can forget the fact that part of the island has a busy international airport on it, then get away to the very west corner at Tai O, where you can really relax. So much so that you will lose track of time, and even forget you're in Hong Kong. There is no commercial element here. Plenty of hikes, even waterfalls, boat cruises and the highlight is the seafood and walking around the traditional fishing village on stilts. An amazing place!

Where is it? - Tai O is on the west side of Lantau Island and you can get there by bus from close to the Tung Chung MTR station. There's also a bus from Mui Wo which in turn has a direct ferry to Hong Kong Central.

5. CHILE: Cape Horn/Cabo De Hornos:

It would just feel ridiculous to leave the magic of Cape Horn off this list! Cape Horn is pretty much the southernmost point of the civilised world and the marker point for the start of the Drake Passage. All that remains further south is Antarctica, which makes Cape Horn feel like the end of the world. OK, so I didn't actually set foot on Cape Horn (that was a bit beyond my budget!), but our ship sailed right up close to it, so we could get a glimpse of 'the horn'. Just to note there is actually a set of islands further south called the Diego Ramirez Islands but nobody lives there. Cape Horn is the end of the world.

How to get there - If you want to actually step on Cape Horn then you'll have to contact the Chilean naval authorities, as there is a 13 kilometre rule for boats approaching it (our boat managed to get within a few kilometres of Cape Horn luckily as the sea was calmer than normal). If not you can book boat tours from southern Chile and Argentina which will take you round the Horn. Or do what I did and pop over to view it, on the way home from Antarctica!

How I Enjoyed My Summer Trip

I have to tell you, I simply love traveling with my family. When I was a young kid my family and I used to travel all summer long. Sometimes we would head up to the California coast for some fishing. But there were times when we felt like camping or hiking. We had an absolute ball no matter what we did though.

Now that I have a family of my own, I want to continue those same traditions. I believe that kids are indoors too much these days you know. I don't want to be like that and I do not want my family to be like that either. I truly think it makes people appreciate life more if they can see the world a bit.

Last year we went to Lake Tahoe for a long week. In case you haven't been there, you would really love it. You won't believe your eyes when you see how clear this lake is. You also won't believe how cold it is on your feet.

We decided to try and avoid staying in a hotel this trip though. Hotels are never much fun, but in Tahoe they are worse. The thing is, you smell like smoke the whole time because the gamers like to smoke a lot. The other thing is that you pay a fortune to eat in the restaurants in there.

But my solution was simple. After a bit of looking around, I found some really nice rental homes we could stay in. I was fearful that I would end up spending more money in a rental house, but I was quite wrong. I honestly saved quite a bit of money by staining in a rental house to my shock.

We also managed to save a lot of money on our eating. With full kitchen access, we just needed some groceries and we were good to go for the week. It was fantastic.

I believe we may head back this coming winter as well. I thought that trying out some snow skiing would be a blast. I hate cold weather, but I know that skiing equipment keeps you really warm, and we would have a fireplace to use too.

OK so there are a few different ways to cross the border between Argentina and Paraguay but I did the route from Puerto Iguazu, ARGENTINA to Ciudad del Este, PARAGUAY. In December 2010. Although in hindsight, the border crossing seemed easy compared to others I've been to, there is still a need to get things right, read on and I'll explain exactly what I did. This was one of the oddest border crossings I have ever done, for one reason and that is that in the space of 45 minutes I was in three countries...confused? Yes it did confuse me a bit...this is the first of many reports on crossing world borders from my various travels...

Firstly - you get a bus at Puerto Iguazu bus station with PARAGUAY written as the destination on it. These buses are yellow in colour and single decker with the words El Practico written on them. They leave quite regularly throughout the day. I crossed on a Sunday morning, around 10 am. I don't think that you can buy tickets in advance, so just check out of your hostel or hotel in the small town of Puerto Iguazu and go to the bus station (there is just one main bus station in Puerto Iguazu). I would recommend doing this early in the morning - I have no idea if the border is open at night - nor if it would be worth risking it.

I was alone and my plan was simply get into Paraguay, have a quick look at Ciudad del Este and then head to Asuncion.

Ciudad del Este, the current name for this city, which literally means City of The East, is on the other side of the river from Argentina. The river acts as the border, and the bridge is the preferred crossing. As this is a post about the border crossing, I won't digress but I had already been to Tres Fronteras (the point where you can see all three countries). It gets confusing when you realise that your bus to Paraguay goes VIA BRAZIL.

So I paid 5 Argentine Pesos for the bus and asked with the driver to confirm if he could stop at the border for me to get my passport stamped. I was the only person on the bus that wasn't from either Brazil, Argentina or Paraguay. Those three countries have some kind of agreement between each other visa wise.

I actually reckoned a lot of "backpackers" (I dislike that term, but I actually am one...) would be going from Iguazu through into Paraguay next to see the popular Ituapu Dam and the Jesuit Ruins in Trinidad. But after talking to around 30 people at the hostel (the marvellous Hostel Inn Iguazu Falls) I realised not one of them was going to Paraguay, nor did they want to go. A few of my fellow travellers even said to me "why would you want to go to Paraguay?"! With that kind of statement it that makes me realise that some of us are avid travellers and some are just not up for the travel melarkey. An avid traveller will literally go anywhere, anytime. Someone who is not in the avid traveller mode, will be much more choosy about where they go. I'll go anywhere. Whether these guys in the hostel wanted to head to Paraguay or not was up to them, but I was now alone and there were no other "backpackers" on my bus or in the station that morning at all.

Of course to travel in South America you should have some grasp of Spanish at least (I studied in Montevideo but my Spanish is shocking) so you can chat to locals and bus drivers. Once I saw the "queue for Paraguay" developing, I joined it, bag laden to the core and sweaty. Importantly I had my passport in hand and all my money changed into Paraguayan Guarani. This is important - change ALL your Argentine Pesos (except for the price of the bus) into Paraguayan Guarani in Puerto Iguazu. You can even do this on a Sunday morning - I found a bank/exchange place in town at 9am to get mine changed.

After boarding the bus you head out of the town of Puerto Iguazu to the border bridge into Brazil. Brazil? Yes! don't be worried at this point as you are still on the bus to Paraguay! At the Argentina exit customs place you have to ensure you ask your driver to let you out to get your passport stamped. Most of your fellow passengers on the bus won't need to get off - on my trip they were mostly locals.

Get off the bus, grab your bags and get your passport stamped and straight back on the bus. Then the bus will cross the Iguazu River into Brazil. But the bus will not stop at the Brazilian border control. The driver of the bus does this route all the time and the sign on the front of the bus tells you that you are heading to "Paraguay Directo" (directly to Paraguay). You have arrived officially in Brazil, but with no proof of it as you are in transit on a bus!

You will drive through the city of Foz Do Iguacu, you can read on my website many more of my reports on the actual waterfalls and my first trip across into Brazil. Most people on this route will have just been to the awesome Iguazu Falls.

After about 20 minutes in Brazil on the bus you arrive at the border bridge. Again you will see a border checkpoint here, but you will by pass it. This is the Brazilian border point. Your eyes will remind you that you were officially in Brazil for 20 minutes, but your passport will not. There is no requirement to get your passport stamped at either of these Brazilian passport checkpoints, BUT once your bus gets onto the bridge, keep your eyes peeled for the actual Paraguay entrance border checkpoint. You should do this because the driver will not stop there, so you need to tell him to stop there for you to get out and get your passport stamped.

Unfortunately when you tell the driver to stop and you get out, he won't wait for you as the passengers onboard Don't want to hang around waiting for a gringo to get their passport stamped. You get out and are immediately in the madness of Ciudad del Este, while your bus continues on its route.

I should also mention that you are urged not to cross this border by foot, mainly because of of the risk of robberies and personal safety issues. The bus is only 5 Pesos you might as well get the bus! I ran to the front of the bus and shouted for the driver to stop, this was about 300 metres ahead of the checkpoint. I just expected him to stop soon but of course he didn't so I got out on my own. I actually asked him if he could wait for me but I soon realised he wouldn't, so I had to grab both my bags. This was my amazing arrival into Paraguay!

OK so I was now in Paraguay but I still had to find the place to get my entry stamp on my passport - and it was far from obvious - at the back of a building site on the Paraguayan side of the bridge. I actually wish I had made a video of my trip that morning - looking back it was just madness!. It was hot, busy, stuffy and I was bag laden, lonely, lost and inspired! Luckily within a few minutes I arrived in the passport immigration place and obviously I was the only person in there. They stamped my entry quickly and it was easy here I was in Ciudad del Este, Paraguay! In the previous hour I had now been "in" three countries. Though I had no proof of my Brazilian bus journey (save for a video I took!).

I can't promise you that this is the simplest way across the border into Paraguay from Brazil (or Argentina) but I loved it partly because I was the only real traveller about. I could tell instantly that Ciudad del Este was a crazy city. Lots of locals asked me if I wanted to buy stuff. You can stay a night or two in this border city known as Ciudad del Este if you want but I had no time to linger as I wanted to get to Asuncion fairly quickly.

By chance I found a taxi driver hanging around opposite the Immigration Office (he was on a corner where food and all sorts were being sold) and he could drive me to the main bus station on the edge of Ciudad del Este for a fee of 3-4 US Dollars I think (this was thousands in Paraguayan Guarani!). Get yourself off the busy streets and a taxi to the bus station if you're heading out of Ciudad del Este.
